Minister of Islamic Affairs, Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed, has proposed an initiative to build mosques with a capacity of 300 people through the collective participation of 6,000 donors.
Sharing his views on Facebook, the Minister expressed confidence that such a project could be successfully carried out during the upcoming Ramadan.
According to Minister Dr Shaheem, the cost of constructing a 300-person mosque is estimated at MVR 6 million. If 6,000 people contribute MVR 1,000 each, the necessary funding could be raised efficiently, making the initiative a rewarding opportunity.
He further encouraged private organisations to take the lead in launching such a campaign, assuring that the Ministry of Islamic Affairs would extend its full support. Additionally, he welcomed the participation of wealthy donors, pledging assistance in facilitating their contributions toward mosque construction.
Highlighting the urgent need for mosques across the country, Minister Dr Shaheem stated that 42 islands currently require new mosques.
The Minister also noted that, in addition to the six newly announced mosques and the 35 mosque construction projects underway, the Government is currently overseeing the development of a total of 41 mosques. Additionally, 12 more mosque projects are being funded through the generous contributions of private donors.
