Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development, Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed, delivered a statement marking International Social Justice Day, observed annually on February 20.

In his address, Minister Dr Haidar emphasised social justice as "the bedrock of a peaceful and prosperous society."

"We must stand up against discrimination, overcome challenges to opportunities, and help establish a society where every citizen is heard and valued," he stated.

The Minister outlined key areas vital to achieving social justice, including ensuring occupational health and safety, promoting gender equality, encouraging societal participation, and fostering employment opportunities.

He highlighted the Maldivian Government's commitment to protecting workers' rights through the effective implementation of the Occupational Safety and Health Act, while simultaneously developing the skills and capabilities of Maldivian youth to meet the demands of a rapidly evolving world.

Minister Dr Haidar further emphasised the Administration's dedication to empowering marginalised communities, advancing sustainable development, and enhancing community resilience to the impacts of climate change.

In 2024, the Maldives joined the 'Global Coalition for Social Justice,' an initiative launched by the International Labour Organization in 2023. The Minister noted that this membership underscores the administration's commitment to eliminating discrimination.

The Minister concluded his address with a call to collective action, urging the Administration, civil society, and institutions to work together to create a Maldives and a world where justice, equality, and dignity are accessible to all – he stressed that achieving this vision requires concerted and sustained effort.
