President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Dhivehi language is the foundation of Maldivian identity.
In a message on X marking International Mother Language Day, the President stated that the essence of Maldivian identity lies in the Dhivehi language. He noted that every symbol of national pride, including the Maldivian flag and the country itself, is deeply connected to the language.
Additionally, he stated that the preservation of Dhivehi is key to maintaining Maldivian heritage, as it has been in the past, remains so today, and will continue to be for future generations.
International Mother Language Day, observed annually on February 21, aims to promote linguistic and cultural diversity while emphasising the importance of language in shaping societies.
This year’s theme, “Languages Matter: Silver Jubilee Celebration of International Mother Language Day,” highlights the need to preserve linguistic heritage and advance efforts toward a more inclusive and sustainable world by 2030.
