Finance Ministry reports MVR 1.4 billion budget surplus, up 109% from last year

The Maldives has reported a budget surplus of MVR 1.4 billion as of February 13, 2025, with revenue and grants exceeding total expenditure.
According to the Ministry of Finance and Planning's weekly statistics, from January 1 to February 13, 2025, the total revenue and grants amounted to MVR 4.4 billion, with a significant increase in import duties contributing to revenue growth. During the same period, total expenditure stood at MVR 3.04 billion, with Aasandha-related spending being the largest contributor to the week’s expenditure.
The total revenue breakdown includes MVR 3.8 billion in tax revenue, MVR 541.3 million in non-tax revenue, MVR 28.3 million in grants, and MVR 0.3 million in capital receipts.
Recurrent and capital expenditure for the period reached MVR 3.04 billion, reflecting a 26.4 per cent decrease compared to the MVR 4.13 billion spent during the same period in 2024.
The report also highlights budget utilisation across key Government offices, with highest spending recorded in the Ministry of Construction, Housing & Infrastructure, the Ministry of Education, the National Social Protection Agency, Maldives Police Service, and the Ministry of Health.
The overall budget balance stands at a surplus of MVR 1.4 billion, marking a 109.2 per cent increase compared to the MVR 669.1 million surplus recorded during the same period last year.
