Maldives Police Service (MPS) has launched an investigation into death threats made against Foreign Minister Dr Abdulla Khaleel by a Sri Lankan national during the Minister's official visit to Sri Lanka.

The threats were issued on social media by an individual under the name Nadish Perera, who repeatedly targeted the Minister in posts on X. In addition, the suspect visited the Maldives Embassy in Sri Lanka, where he placed documents criticising Maldives Immigration Controller Mohamed Shamman in an electricity distribution box near the embassy.

Authorities confirmed that the suspect has a history of making threats against Maldivian Government officials and has continued issuing threats since Minister Dr Khaleel’s arrival in Sri Lanka. Maldives Police Service stated that the matter is under investigation in coordination with relevant agencies.

It has also been reported that the suspect was previously deported from the Maldives. However, further details on his background and motives remain undisclosed as the investigation progresses.
