Parliament to review President's Non-Resident Ambassador appointments

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has submitted a motion to Parliament seeking approval for the appointment of Non-Resident Ambassadors to two countries.

The matter has been referred to Parliamant's Foreign Relations Committee for further review.

Under the proposal, Turkish Ambassador Lieutenant General (Rtd) Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef has been nominated as the Non-Resident Ambassador to Russia, while Saudi Arabia’s Ambassador Ahmed Sareer has been designated as the Non-Resident Ambassador to Morocco.

Ahmed Sareer has had a distinguished career in diplomacy, having served various diplomatic positions since 1987. His previous roles include Maldives’ Permanent Representative to the United Nations and Ambassador to Bangladesh. He has also held various high-ranking positions within the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, including Assistant Under Secretary, Assistant Director, and Foreign Secretary.

Meanwhile, Abdul Raheem Abdul Latheef, who currently serves as the first resident Maldivian Ambassador to Türkiye, has an extensive 39-year military career. He has held various key positions in the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF), including serving as the Chief of Defence Force.
