Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) has announced measures to streamline the clearance of perishable goods and general cargo ahead of Ramadan, to prevent delays and ensure uninterrupted supply.

At a press conference on February 24, 2025,, MPL Head of Operations Ilyas Mohamed detailed plans to enhance efficiency, including clearing up to 150 containers daily at full capacity and targeting 100 containers on half-working days.

To address storage constraints, MPL has expanded warehouse facilities in Malé, established a temporary storage tent in Hulhumalé, and introduced a dry storage unit to accommodate perishable goods that cannot be stored in existing facilities.

Additionally, MPL is deploying extra personnel on vessels, relocating transport vehicles from regional airports to Malé, and adjusting operating hours to manage the increased workload. Services will be available daily except Fridays, with working hours set from 9:15 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. and night operations from 9:15 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. The Hulhumalé Terminal will also follow the same schedule.

Limited storage space remains a significant challenge, according to Ilyas, though he noted that container capacity has been increased from 3,600 to 5,100 containers since last year. As part of long-term solutions, MPL plans to relocate empty containers to Thilafushi in the coming months.

The initiative is part of broader efforts to facilitate efficient cargo handling and ensure essential goods remain available throughout the fasting month.
