Deputy Speaker of Parliament Ahmed Nazim has declared that the current Minister of Homeland Security and Technology of the Maldives, Ali Ihusaan, is the most capable person to have held the position since the implementation of the current Constitution.

The Deputy Speaker made these remarks during today's parliamentary session while debating a no-confidence motion against Minister Ihusaan, submitted by 12 opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) Parliament members.

During the debate, the Deputy Speaker emphasised that the motion submitted by the MDP against the Minister does not contain any evidence establishing grounds specified in Article 132 of the Constitution. He also noted that the motion fails to prove that the Minister has been negligent in carrying out the responsibilities assigned to him by the President in his official capacity as a member of the Cabinet.

The Deputy Speaker pointed out that in his response to the motion in Parliament today, Minister Ihusaan outlined the work carried out by the institutions under his Ministry over the past 15 months, their achievements, and future plans.

"Among the Home Ministers we have seen since our country's new Constitution, none have been more trustworthy and capable than Ali Ihusaan – this is an undeniable fact," the Deputy Speaker said.

He further noted that through his collaborative work with the Minister since parliamentary committees began their functions, he has come to know the Minister as a sincere patriot. He acknowledged the cooperation received from the ministry in various parliamentary committee tasks and said that the Minister has been working to address many issues requiring improvement in the country.

As an example, the Deputy Speaker highlighted that Minister Ihusaan had requested the Auditor General to conduct an audit of the Police Welfare Company (POLCO), which has led to an ongoing corruption investigation following the receipt of the audit report.

He further stated that considering the extent to which corruption and malfeasance have taken root in Maldivian society, the current parliamentary term represents the final opportunity to address these issues, and Minister Ihusaan has been cooperative in Parliament's efforts towards this end.

The Deputy Speaker added that to resolve issues such as undocumented migrants, drug problems, and corruption, it is necessary to entrust these responsibilities to someone with the courage, knowledge, and capability to tackle them. He said that Minister Ihusaan currently holds this responsibility, possesses these qualities, and should be given the opportunity to resolve these problems.
