The Minister of Homeland Security and Technology, Ali Ihusaan, has stated that if he had influenced investigations conducted by the Maldivian Police Service, former leaders of the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) government would now be imprisoned.
The Minister made these remarks while attending Parliament to respond to a no-confidence motion submitted by the opposition MDP, where he addressed the allegations against him.
Responding to accusations that he interferes in police investigations and obstructs inquiries into criminal acts involving government-affiliated individuals, the Minister dismissed the claims as “absolutely baseless.”
He stated that if he had indeed exerted influence over police investigations, key figures from the former administration would already be behind bars.
“If I had been politically influencing the police, all the leaders of the previous government would now be imprisoned. The fact that they remain free is proof that I do not interfere,” the Minister asserted.
He further noted that the police are currently investigating multiple cases related to the previous government and emphasised that these inquiries are being conducted strictly within the legal framework, free from political interference.
“The police are investigating matters related to Corrections, Customs, Immigration, Fuel Supplies, the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), and the Housing Ministry,” the Minister said.
Highlighting the ongoing collaboration between law enforcement and state institutions, Minister Ihusaan remarked that many of these cases involve government entities. He added that had he been exerting undue influence, these investigations would not have progressed.
