Dr Abdulla Khaleel, Minister of Foreign Affairs, has reaffirmed the Maldives' unwavering commitment to the promotion and protection of human rights.
Speaking at the high-level segment of the ongoing 58th session of the Human Rights Council in Geneva, Switzerland, Minister Dr Khaleel emphasised the Government’s dedication to upholding international human rights treaties and safeguarding the rights of all Maldivian citizens.
In his address, the Minister highlighted the Maldives' active role as a member of the Human Rights Council. He spoke of the country’s contribution to the establishment of a voluntary trust fund aimed at encouraging Small Island Developing States (SIDS) to participate in the Council’s work. Additionally, he noted the Maldives’ efforts in advocating for the global recognition of a clean, healthy, and sustainable environment as a fundamental human right.
Minister Dr Khaleel also spoke about the initiatives of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Administration to strengthen human rights protection within the Maldives. He highlighted the Government's focus on social issues, including gender equality, adequate housing, the increased inclusion of persons with disabilities in society, and measures to mitigate the impact of climate change.
Addressing global human rights concerns, the Minister expressed deep concern over the genocide in Palestine. He strongly condemned Israel’s attacks on Palestinian civilians, describing them as inhumane and lamenting the significant loss of life and suffering endured by the Palestinian people.
The 58th session of the Human Rights Council is taking place in Geneva from February 24 to April 4, 2025. The Maldives, currently serving as a member of the Council for the 2023–2025 term, is participating for the third time in its history.
