The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) has announced that 94 per cent of land reclamation work under the Holhudhoo Beach Protection Project in Noonu Atoll has been completed.
In an update on X, MTCC stated that ongoing work includes concrete reinforcement and the installation of essential infrastructure. The project, which aims to mitigate coastal erosion and improve resilience against high tides, was officially handed over to MTCC on January 16, 2023.
The Holhudhoo Beach Protection Project is estimated to cost MVR 43.28 million and includes several key components. These include the reclamation of a new harbour basin with a capacity of 10,614 cubic metres, filling a detached ramp area with 1,375 cubic metres of material, and constructing outer fencing covering 570 metres. Additionally, the project involves revetment work across 14 metres, geobag revetments spanning 375 metres, and an additional 89 metres of geobag fortifications.
Further developments include the construction of a land stretch, paving an area of 418 square metres, and setting up port lights. The project also includes a detached ramp at the southern revetment.
Holhudhoo, home to approximately 2,000 residents, has long struggled with coastal erosion and flooding during high tides. The project is expected to provide significant relief by reinforcing the island’s coastline and enhancing its environmental sustainability.
