President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has confirmed that land reclamation efforts in Hulhudheli will commence by July of this year, with plans to reclaim a significant portion of the island’s lagoon.

The announcement came during his visit to South Nilandhe Atoll, where he met with residents to discuss development initiatives.

As part of the project, conservation measures will be integrated to ensure sustainable land expansion. The Government has committed to expediting the work to achieve prompt completion.

In addition to the reclamation efforts, infrastructure enhancements are also on the agenda. A new school building is set for construction in May to address student overcrowding, while plans for a fully equipped health centre have been outlined, aiming to improve both medical facilities and technical expertise.

To support the local fishing industry, the President revealed that an ice plant will be established in the third quarter of the year, providing much-needed resources for fishermen. Additionally, Hulhudheli has been selected as one of the islands to receive fish aggregating devices (FADs) to bolster sports fishing activities.

A key highlight of the visit was the signing of an agreement to develop a Waste Management Centre, fulfilling a previous commitment by the President. The facility is expected to be operational within four months.

In a significant financial development, ATM services have now been introduced in Hulhudheli, making South Nilandhe the first atoll where every inhabited island has access to such services.

Hulhudheli was the final stop on the President’s tour of South Nilandhe Atoll, where he engaged with local communities and outlined various initiatives aimed at boosting infrastructure and economic opportunities in the region.
