The Government is gearing up to advance Eydhafushi as a development hub with the construction of 1,000 housing units, which are set to transform the island. Dr Abdulla Muththalib, the Minister for Construction and Infrastructure, outlined the vision for the project, emphasising its potential to drive sustainable growth and development in the region.
Eydhafushi, with its limited opportunities for further land acquisition, is ideally suited for a vertical housing model. This approach will maximise the use of available space, promoting efficient and sustainable growth. The Minister highlighted that the development is aimed at transforming Eydhafushi into a regional hub for population growth and economic activity, aligning with the Government’s broader urbanisation strategy.
The Minister also pointed out that Eydhafushi already has strong infrastructure, including a solid education system and healthcare services, providing a strong foundation for future growth. The island's strategic accessibility to Malé by both sea and air makes it an ideal location for developing an urban centre that balances population growth and economic development across the region.
A key focus of the project is addressing the housing needs of workers in the tourism sector. With numerous resorts nearby, the project will allow workers and their families to live closer to their places of employment.
"The island is poised to become a central hub for population growth and development within Baa Atoll. Surrounded by numerous resorts, Eydhafushi is ideally positioned to fulfil this role. As part of the President's pledge to provide housing opportunities, the project will allow individuals working in the tourism sector to reside with their families close to their workplaces within the region," Minister Muththalib said.
Minister Dr Muthalib also expressed optimism that the project would secure financing promptly, with construction set to begin by 2025. This development will not only increase the population of Eydhafushi but also create new employment opportunities for Maldivians in nearby resorts.
The Government envisions Eydhafushi as a key urban centre in the region, with this housing project acting as a cornerstone of its broader development strategy.
