The Maldives National University (MNU) and the Kolamaafushi Council have signed an agreement to establish an outreach centre under MNU’s Fisheries College in Gaafu Alifu Kolamaafushi.

The initiative aims to enhance fisheries education, research, and sustainable marine development in the region.

The agreement was signed by representatives from MNU and Kolamaafushi Council President Ibrahim Waheed. According to MNU, the 15,000-square-foot facility will serve as a hub for fisheries training, offering students hands-on experience and research opportunities. The centre is expected to bring economic, social, and environmental benefits to Kolamaafushi and the broader Huvadhoo Atoll.

The project follows a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed in December 2023 to establish a dedicated Fisheries Education and Training College. Although the Ministry of Fisheries and Ocean Resources was previously tasked with setting up such a facility, the project had not materialised. The initiative has now been prioritised under President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Administration, aligning with the Government’s commitment to advancing the fisheries sector within the first 100 days in office.
