The Ministry of Cities, Administration, and Public Works has taken over 21 ferry stops in the northern region as part of the Integrated National Public Ferry Network.

These facilities will be integrated into the Raajje Transport Link (RTL) system, which aims to enhance inter-island connectivity.

The transfer was formalised at a ceremony held at Villa College, where a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed between the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), the Ministry of Cities, Administration and Public Works, and the Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation.

Following the signing, Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen officially handed over the ferry stops to Minister Adam Shareef Umar, representing the Ministry of Cities and Administration. Under the agreement, the Ministry will assign ferry stops to respective island councils, which will be responsible for their upkeep and management.

Minister Shareef stated that all land rights associated with the ferry stops would be transferred to the councils, allowing them to lease out adjacent commercial spaces for revenue generation.

The RTL ferry service in the northern atolls is expected to commence soon as part of the Government’s broader strategy to improve nationwide transport infrastructure.
