Women’s national basketball team receives Presidential praise for historic silver

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has congratulated the Maldives women’s national basketball team for securing silver medal at the South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) Women’s Basketball Tournament.

In a message shared on 'X', President Dr Muizzu praised the team’s resilience and strong performance in the regional tournament held in New Delhi, India. He commended the players for their dedication and determination, highlighting their achievement as a significant milestone for Maldivian basketball.

The Maldives finished second after facing defending champions India in the final match, where India secured victory with a 113-25 scoreline. Despite the loss, Maldivian players showed commendable effort, with Raifa Ibrahim scoring seven points and captain Aminath Shiura contributing six points and nine rebounds.

This is the first time the Maldives has won a silver medal in the tournament, having previously secured bronze in 2016 and 2022.
