The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued a weather advisory, warning of heavy rainfall and rough sea conditions across the country over the next two days.

The adverse weather is expected to primarily affect the southern and central atolls, with strong winds and turbulent seas posing risks to maritime activities.

According to the forecast, heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely, particularly in the central and southern regions. Wind speeds are expected to range between 8-18 kmph in the north-central atolls, with gusts up to 15 kmph, while the south-central atolls may experience winds of 3-13 kmph, gusting up to 13 kmph.

The central and northern seas are expected to be rough to very rough, with wave heights between 4 to 7 feet, while the southern atolls will generally experience calmer seas, with waves ranging from 2 to 5 feet.

The weather disturbance is attributed to a circulation system in the eastern part of the country. Authorities have advised seafarers and the general public to remain cautious, particularly those travelling by sea, as the conditions may pose significant risks. The Met Office continues to monitor the situation and urges residents to stay updated on further advisories.
