President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that the Izzuddin Jetty stands as a testament to Maldivian identity, craftsmanship, and the bridge between the nation's storied past and promising future.
Speaking at the reopening ceremony of Izzuddin Jetty held at Jumhooree Maidhaan on Thursday night, President Dr Muizzu highlighted that the jetty was developed in line with the Government's national development policy, particularly its efforts to revive Maldivian heritage. He described it as "a living reflection of our nation's exceptional craftsmanship, deep historical significance, and ambitious future aspirations."
The President noted that the area encompassing the Izzuddin Jetty, Jumhooree Maidhaan fountain, and Sultan Park constitutes one of Malé's largest recreational zones. He also announced plans for the redevelopment of Sultan Park within six months, incorporating modern technology to present the nation's history in an engaging manner for younger generations.
In outlining the Government's broader vision for urban renewal, the President revealed that the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) would commence work on upgrading the road from the MTCC Ferry Terminal to the Maldives Monetary Authority (MMA) building by the end of Ramadan. The project will include sheet piling and partial sea reclamation to expand the road to two lanes, with completion targeted for the end of this year.
The President also noted that the jetty's redesign and structural upgrade had been commissioned to MTCC a year ago due to safety concerns arising from prolonged lack of maintenance.
