Vice President welcomes women’s basketball team after SABA silver

Vice President Uz Hussain Mohamed Latheef has welcomed the Maldives women's national basketball team upon their arrival in the country after securing a historic silver medal at the 3rd South Asian Basketball Association (SABA) Women’s Basketball Tournament.
The team was greeted at Velana International Airport, where Minister of Sports, Fitness and Recreation Abdullah Rafiu, Commissioner of Sports Mohamed Tholal, and Minister of State for Sports, Fitness and Recreation Mohamed Riyaz were also present.
The Maldivian team finished second in the tournament, which was held in New Delhi, India, with India securing gold after defeating the Maldives 107-32 in the final match on February 26, 2025. Despite the loss, the Maldivian players put up a commendable performance, with Raifa Ibrahim scoring seven points and captain Aminath Shiura contributing six points and nine rebounds. This silver medal is a historic achievement for the national team, having previously secured bronze in 2016 and 2022.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu also congratulated the team on their achievement, praising their resilience and strong performance in a message shared on ‘X’. He commended the players for their dedication and determination, highlighting their silver medal win as a significant milestone for Maldivian basketball.
