MET office issues alerts as Maldives faces intense weather

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) has issued multiple White Alerts due to heavy rain, thunderstorms, and strong winds affecting several regions of the country.
The adverse weather conditions are expected to persist over the next 48 hours, with officials warning of potential risks to transportation and daily activities. Strong winds reaching up to 40 mph, along with intense rainfall, are forecasted, particularly in the southern and central atolls.
Weather alerts have been issued for different parts of the country, with warnings in place for Baa Atoll to Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll from 09:00 hrs to 15:00 hrs on February 28, 2025. The MET office has also issued a separate alert for Baa Atoll to Laamu Atoll, effective from 03:30 hrs to 09:00 hrs on the same day, with similar weather patterns expected and for Kaafu to Meemu Atoll, effective from 12:45 hrs to 16:00 hrs.
Rough sea conditions are anticipated in the central and northern regions, where wave heights are projected to reach between 4 to 7 feet. In contrast, the southern seas are expected to remain calmer, with waves ranging from 2 to 5 feet.
Wind speeds in the north-central atolls are expected to range from 8 to 18 kmph, with gusts of up to 15 kmph, while the south-central regions may experience winds between 3 to 13 kmph, with gusts reaching 13 kmph.
The MET office has advised the public, especially seafarers, to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel by sea. Authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and have urged residents to stay updated with the latest weather advisories.
