President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced plans to modernise and expand key roads in Malé and Villimalé, with construction set to begin after Ramadan.

The project will include the redevelopment of area near Izzuddin Jetty and other major roads, with portions of the waterfront reclaimed using sheet piling to create additional lanes. The initiative aims to address congestion and improve road infrastructure in the capital.

Speaking at the inauguration of the redesigned Izzuddin Falan, President Dr Muizzu stated that the project will expand the roads to four lanes, with two additional lanes created by reclaiming part of the sea.

The section from the MTCC Henveiru Ferry Terminal to the local market, which is not included in China’s road development project, will be developed using state funds. The Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) will oversee the work, with completion targeted for the end of the year.

A feasibility study for the broader road modernisation initiative in Malé and Villimalé is currently underway, according to the President. Once completed, construction will begin without delay. He confirmed that the necessary funding for the project has already been secured.

The President emphasised that, along with housing, road development is a key priority for the Government. He noted that the project aims to resolve long-standing traffic congestion and infrastructure issues in Malé, ensuring safer and more efficient transport.
