The Haa Alif Baarah Island Council has announced plans to establish a museum to showcase the island’s cultural and historical heritage, with construction set to begin this year.

The initiative was confirmed during a meeting between the council and the Ministry of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage, where discussions focused on preserving and maintaining heritage sites.

Baarah Council President Sofath Mohamed stated that funds for the project have been allocated in this year’s budget. The museum aims to highlight the island’s rich history, particularly its links to national hero Bodu Thakurufaanu Mohamed Thakurufaanu and his resistance against Portuguese occupation in the 16th century.

Minister of Dhivehi Language, Culture, and Heritage Adam Naseer Ibrahim assured that the ministry would provide full support for the initiative, including assistance with documentation and preservation efforts.

Following the discussions, Minister Adam Naseer inspected key heritage sites in Baarah, including an ancient mosque, the Barahafathi tree, and wells believed to have been used by Bodu Thakurufaanu and his men.

The visit is part of a broader effort to develop a structured plan for heritage conservation. As part of this initiative, the minister has also visited Haa Alif Utheem and Thakandhoo, with the tour scheduled to conclude on February 28, 2025.
