Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim has inspected the installation of temporary generator sets by the State Electric Company (STELCO) in Hulhumalé, as part of efforts to enhance power security in the Greater Malé Region.

The project involves adding 12 generators to the Greater Malé Interconnection Grid to serve as a backup power source, ensuring an uninterrupted electricity supply during peak demand periods.

During his visit to the site on Thursday night, Minister Thoriq, accompanied by STELCO Managing Director Hussain Fahmy, reviewed ongoing work and emphasised the importance of addressing the region’s growing electricity demand. He noted that while the temporary powerhouse would provide immediate relief, long-term measures were necessary to ensure a stable power supply.

The Government is implementing strategic policies to enhance energy efficiency, expand renewable energy initiatives, and make future-oriented investments in the power sector. Minister Thoriq reaffirmed the Administration’s commitment to sustainable energy solutions and acknowledged STELCO’s efforts in executing the President’s directive to maintain reliable electricity services.
