Two decommissioned Air Maldives Dornier aircrafts are set to be submerged in Kaafu Kudagiri Lagoon as part of a project to develop a new dive wreck site.
The initiative is a collaboration between the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC).
Preparations for the project are underway, with the designated area being cleared ahead of the planned submersion. The dive site is expected to enhance Kudagiri’s appeal as a recreational destination, offering new experiences for divers while contributing to marine biodiversity.
An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report on the project has outlined potential risks associated with transporting and sinking the aircrafts, including safety concerns for workers and seafarers. The report recommends implementing training and precautionary measures to minimise risks during the operation.
The development of the new dive wreck site is anticipated to attract both local and international divers, further supporting the country’s tourism sector by diversifying marine-based activities.
