State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has announced that it will begin installing smart meters across households following the fasting month of Ramadan.

The initiative follows the completion of a pilot project last year, with the first shipment of meters expected to arrive by the end of the month.

STELCO General Manager Ibrahim Nasheed stated that preparations for the rollout are underway, and the company will commence installations as soon as Ramadan concludes. The smart meters will allow consumers to monitor their electricity consumption in real time, with updates provided every 15 minutes. GM Nasheed noted that the system would enhance transparency and enable users to manage their energy usage more efficiently.

The company initially planned to introduce smart meters in Hulhumalé but has since decided to expand the installation to multiple areas simultaneously. The project, one of the largest undertaken by STELCO, aims to transition all existing meters to smart meters within a year.
