Minister of Economic Development and Trade Mohamed Saeed has called on private businesses to keep prices affordable during Ramadan, urging them to support the Government’s efforts in ensuring reasonable costs for consumers.
Speaking on the ‘Roadha Thayyaaru’ programme broadcast on state media last night, Minister Saeed outlined the Government's preparations for the holy month and stressed the importance of collaboration between the public and private sectors.
The Minister noted that some businesses have already committed to price reduction initiatives, highlighting a major fruit and vegetable retailer that has pledged to sell products at lower prices.
“Several businesses are considering similar measures,” he said. “We appeal to the private sector to work with us to keep essential goods affordable for the public rather than using this period to seek excessive profits. With Allah’s blessing, we are recovering from the deep crisis the country faced.”
Minister Saeed assured that if any essential goods become scarce during Ramadan, the Government would arrange their import by air or sea to prevent shortages.
The State Trading Organisation (STO) has already begun importing large quantities of essential goods commonly used by Maldivians. These imports fall into four categories: staple foodstuffs, fresh fruits and vegetables, processed foods, and cooking supplies. STO has pledged to sell these products at reasonable prices throughout the Ramadan period.
Minister Saeed also emphasised that the Government has been preparing well in advance, with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu closely monitoring the efforts to ensure sufficient supply and stable prices for consumers.
