The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has urged the public to refrain from disposing of garbage on roads and public areas, citing challenges posed by heavy rainfall in maintaining sanitation.
The advisory follows poor weather conditions that could lead to waste accumulation and disruptions in collection services.
Despite the adverse weather, WAMCO assured that waste collection operations will continue as scheduled. However, the company advised residents to contact its hotline at 1666 if garbage is not collected, rather than leaving it on the streets.
In preparation for Ramadan, WAMCO has also introduced changes to its waste collection schedule. In Malé, services will run from 08:30 p.m. to 02:30 a.m., in Hulhumalé from 09:00 p.m. to 01:00 a.m., and in Villimalé from 09:30 p.m. to 01:30 a.m. The company has urged residents to adhere to these timings to ensure efficient waste disposal.
Additionally, WAMCO has advised that sharp objects, such as glass, should be securely wrapped and separated to prevent injuries to collection workers. The corporation reiterated its commitment to maintaining cleanliness in the Greater Malé Region and called for public cooperation to manage waste effectively during the fasting month and ongoing rainy season.
