The Government has finalised an agreement to relocate residents of Haa Dhaalu Hirimaradhoo to Hanimaadhoo, following requests from the island’s population.

Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works Adam Shareef Umar confirmed the decision during his visit to Hanimaadhoo, where he met with the island council and community members to discuss the relocation process.

The minister stated that discussions with both island communities had been successful, with full support from residents of Hirimaradhoo and Hanimaadhoo. He emphasised that the move aligns with the Government's commitment to addressing the challenges faced by small island populations and ensuring access to better infrastructure and services.

Hirimaradhoo, which has an estimated population of 500, has seen limited development, with many of its residents living outside the island. Concerns have also been raised over the island’s ageing population and the increasing dependence on external support for basic services.

During his visit, the minister stressed the importance of closely consulting with Hirimaradhoo’s residents to ensure a smooth and well-coordinated transition. Discussions with the Hanimaadhoo Council also focused on improving essential services to accommodate the incoming population. The relocation plan is part of the Government’s broader efforts to enhance development opportunities for smaller island communities by facilitating access to better economic prospects and public services.

Residents of Hirimaradhoo have welcomed the decision, expressing hope that the relocation will provide improved living conditions and greater opportunities for growth.
