Heavy rainfall continued for approximately two hours after sunset in the Malé area, causing street flooding and prompting an orange alert for a large area of the central Maldives, including Malé.
The Maldives Meteorological Service has issued an orange warning covering the area from Baa Atoll to Dhaalu Atoll. The warning is in effect from 9:45 p.m. on 1 March to 2 a.m. on 2 March 2025. According to the alert, torrential rain and thunderstorms with flooding are expected throughout this region.
The layout of Malé's streets makes them prone to flooding during heavy rainfall. In response, the National Defence Force (MNDF) and other agencies are working together to drain water throughout Malé. They have set up pumps in various areas and are placing sandbags at homes where water is entering to minimise damage.
The heavy rain began shortly after sunset in Malé and Hulhumalé, continuing without interruption for about two hours. The prolonged rainfall has caused flooding in several areas of Malé.
MNDF has deployed personnel to place sandbags near affected homes and continues to drain water from the most severely flooded areas.
According to the forecast, various regions of the Maldives will be affected by stormy weather from tonight until Monday. Weather conditions are expected to improve from Monday onwards.
