Heavy rains cause flooding in Malé --

National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has assured they are ready to provide emergency assistance and temporary shelter where required as heavy rainfall continues to cause flooding in various parts of the Maldives.

The agency has stated that while no evacuations have been reported so far, they remain on high alert should temporary shelter be required.

According to NDMA Chief Executive Hisaan Hasan, flooding has been particularly severe in Kaafu Atoll Huraa and Guraidhoo. Both islands have sought assistance, and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) has been mobilised to provide water supply resources and other necessary aid.

While sandbags put in place ahead of the rain have prevented significant displacements in Malé City, Hisaan emphasised that the persistent heavy rainfall could lead to unforeseen circumstances, and the NDMA is fully prepared to act if needed. Emergency response teams are already deployed in affected areas to assess the situation and provide support.

Beyond the capital region, flooding has been reported across several islands in the four southernmost atolls. In this regard, Addu City has reported roof collapses due to strong winds and heavy rainfall. The NDMA has responded swiftly, ensuring aid reaches those affected.

The agency has urged residents in need of emergency assistance to contact the NDMA immediately. With response teams working tirelessly, the NDMA continues to monitor the evolving situation, ready to implement further relief measures as required.
