Maldives has formally submitted a written statement to the International Court of Justice (ICJ) in the advisory proceedings concerning Israel’s obligations in relation to the presence and activities of the United Nations (UN), other international organisations, and third states in the Occupied Palestinian Territory.

This submission follows the UN General Assembly’s resolution adopted on 19 December 2024, which requested the ICJ to provide an advisory opinion on Israel’s responsibilities. The resolution specifically sought clarity on Israel’s obligations in ensuring the unhindered provision of essential supplies, basic services, and humanitarian assistance to Palestinian civilians.

In its statement, the Maldives outlined Israel’s violations of international humanitarian law and human rights treaties, with a particular focus on its failure to provide water to Palestinian civilians. The Maldives also examined Israel’s obligations as a UN member state concerning the operations of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA). The government condemned Israel’s actions in dismantling this vital organisation, which plays a crucial role in supporting Palestinian refugees.

Additionally, the Maldives strongly denounced Israel’s continued breaches of international law, including the expansion of illegal settlements, the destruction of UN relief agencies, and attacks on aid workers. The Government asserted that these actions not only violate the fundamental rights of Palestinians but also undermine efforts towards a peaceful resolution to the conflict.

Reaffirming its unwavering support for the Palestinian people, the Maldives reiterated its commitment to their inalienable rights, including self-determination and sovereignty. It emphasised that the only viable path to lasting peace is the establishment of an independent State of Palestine based on the pre-1967 borders, with East Jerusalem as its capital.

In its statement, the Maldives urged the international community to hold Israel accountable for its violations of international law and called for decisive action to ensure justice for the Palestinian people. The Government reaffirmed its commitment to advocating for Palestinian rights on international platforms, reinforcing its long-standing solidarity with their cause.
