48 rescued after vessel sinks en route to Male’

All 48 people aboard a sinking passenger launch, were rescued on Sunday morning after the vessel began taking on water en route from Alif Dhaalu Dhigurah to Male’ City, according to the Maldives Police Service.
Authorities said they received reports of the launch Huvan sinking at 07:57 a.m. The vessel was carrying 45 passengers and three crew members, including four children.
Emergency response teams were swiftly dispatched, ensuring the safe evacuation of everyone on board. Police confirmed all passengers and crew were transported back to Dhigurah and are in good health.
A full investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the incident, but authorities have not yet disclosed further details.
The Maldives Police Service commended the swift response of rescue teams and those who assisted in the operation in a statement on X.
