Kaafu Dhiffushi has officially recorded the highest daily accumulated rainfall in Maldivian history, with an extraordinary 296.1 mm of precipitation measured over a 24-hour period.

The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET Office) confirmed that this record-breaking measurement was taken between 8:00 a.m. on 1 March and 8:00 a.m. on 2 March 2025. This unprecedented downpour has far exceeded the nation's previous rainfall records. According to meteorological data, the deluge surpassed the second-highest record by nearly 65 mm, setting a new benchmark for extreme precipitation events in the country.

This new measurement has rewritten the Maldives' extreme weather history, now topping the nation’s five highest daily rainfall records:

  • Kaafu Dhiffushi (AWS): 296.1 mm on 1 March 2025
  • Haa Alifu Kelaa (AWS): 231.5 mm on 12 August 2024
  • Malé (AWS): 228.9 mm on 5 December 2018
  • Seenu Gan: 228.4 mm on 24 November 2015
  • Gaafu Dhaalu Kaadedhdhoo: 219.8 mm on 9 July 2002

The MET Office noted that Dhiffushi’s record rainfall represents a 28 per cent increase over the previous record set at Haa Alifu Kelaa less than a year ago, underscoring the exceptional nature of this weather event.

Recognising the severity of the situation, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu declared Sunday, 2 March, a public holiday, allowing citizens to focus on safety and recovery efforts.

Meanwhile, the MET Office has warned of continued heavy rains and thunderstorms across the country today. Seas are expected to be moderately rough, with rougher conditions likely during squalls. A Yellow Alert remains in effect from Haa Alifu to Meemu atolls.
