The Maldives Meteorological Service (Met Office) has issued an advisory urging residents to exercise caution as heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in the northern regions of the Maldives over the next 24 hours.

Widespread heavy rainfall is likely to continue across most parts of the country until Tuesday, with the northern atolls expected to experience particularly intense showers.

In response to adverse weather conditions, a yellow alert has been issued for Haa Alif to Meemu Atoll, warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms. Squally winds ranging from 10 to 20 mph, with gusts of up to 45 mph, are expected to affect the northern atolls and extend westward across other parts of the country. Additionally, seas are expected to be rough to very rough, with conditions likely to intensify throughout the day.

Some areas have recorded significant rainfall over the past 24 hours, with Kaafu Dhifushi receiving 296.1 mm, Hulhumalé 185.2 mm, Nilandhoo 178.2 mm, and Hulhulé 177.2 mm.

The Met Office has attributed the current spell of intense rainfall to a circulation over Sri Lanka and its associated trough. As this system moves towards the northern Maldives, weather conditions are expected to improve from Tuesday onwards.

Given the rough sea conditions prevailing across large parts of the country, the Met Office has strongly advised seafarers to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel until conditions stabilise. Residents are urged to stay informed through official updates and take necessary precautions to ensure their safety.
