The Maldives Police Service has announced special traffic measures for Malé and Hulhumalé during Ramadan, citing increased congestion due to the overlap with school holidays.

Speaking on MMTV Bodu Khabaru programme, Inspector of Police, Thalhath Ahmed, stated that traffic flow is being managed strategically during peak hours to ease congestion. He highlighted that major roads in Malé, including Majeedhee Magu, Bazaarumathi, Boduthakurufaanu Magu, and the Hulhumalé Highway, experience heavy traffic at specific times.

According to Inspector Thalhath, accidents are most frequent after 4:00 pm, often caused by failure to stay within lanes, sudden stops, and inattentiveness while making turns. He noted that pedestrian behaviour also contributes to road congestion, as individuals often stop abruptly to engage in conversations, disrupting traffic flow.

Meanwhile, Head of Hulhumalé Traffic Operations, Ismail Rafeeu, stated that Rabarugas Magu in Hulhumalé is prone to flooding, and police have been proactive in addressing the issue. He reported that seven houses and 14 shops were sandbagged during recent heavy rains.

To ease congestion in Hulhumalé during Ramadan, motorcycle parking zones have been designated near mosques, while abandoned vehicles lacking registration numbers or engines have been removed from the roads. Rafeeu also pointed out that poor parking practices, particularly involving four-wheelers and motorcycles, have contributed to narrower roads and increased congestion. However, he noted that Hulhumalé's roads remain significantly wider than those in Malé, reducing major traffic disruptions.
