The work of Parliament is not limited to what happens on the chamber floor, Speaker of the Parliament Abdul Raheem Abdulla said today, addressing public concerns over the swift conclusion of sessions during Ramadan.

During the session, Speaker Abdul Raheem paused the debate to emphasise an important point for both members and the public. He made it clear that parliamentary responsibilities extend beyond the discussions held in the main chamber.

“The People’s Parliament does not function solely through debates on the floor. The most significant work takes place in parliamentary committees,” he said.

Speaker Abdul Raheem pointed out that even today, five parliamentary committees were actively engaged in their respective duties. He noted that if all members assigned to these committees were involved in their work, around 55 MPs would be contributing to legislative business.

He also stressed that the early conclusion of floor proceedings does not mean Parliament’s work has stopped – instead, it allows MPs to focus on committee work, where much of the legislative process takes shape. He encouraged members to take full advantage of this time to fulfil their responsibilities effectively.
