Switzerland’s Edelweiss Airlines in talks to boost flights to Maldives

Switzerland-based Edelweiss Airlines has engaged in discussions to expand its operations to the Maldives as part of the ongoing ITB Berlin Fair.
The talks have focused on increasing flight frequency and attracting more tourists, particularly during the low season. As one of the world’s most significant travel trade events, ITB Berlin provides an important platform for strengthening international tourism ties. This year’s fair, which began on February 4 and will continue until February 6, has drawn a delegation of 200 representatives from 89 Maldivian tourism companies, all working to reinforce the country’s position in the global travel industry.
Among the attendees was the Maldivian Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, who has been meeting with industry leaders throughout the event. One of the discussions took place with Edelweiss Airlines, focusing on expanding air connectivity between Switzerland and the Maldives. Edelweiss Airlines currently operates weekly flights to the Maldives, but efforts are underway to increase these services to attract more visitors.
The Maldives has maintained a strong presence at ITB Berlin for several years, consistently using the platform to showcase its appeal as a world-class travel destination. This year, the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC) has been actively promoting the country, facilitating connections with leading tour operators, travel agents, and media representatives across European markets. a. A key focus is increasing tourist arrivals from German-speaking countries, particularly Germany, a major source market.
So far this year, the Maldives has welcomed over 451,000 tourists, with Germany and Switzerland among the top ten source markets. More than 28,000 visitors have arrived from Germany, while over 9,700 have travelled from Switzerland.
