The State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) has urged the public to be mindful of electricity usage as power consumption in Malé and Hulhumalé has reached record levels during the month of Ramadan.

In a post on X on Wednesday, STELCO revealed that electricity consumption in the capital exceeded 92 megawatts (MW) for the first time this Ramadan. The company expects demand to rise further in the coming days and has encouraged residents to take measures to conserve electricity.

According to a chart released by STELCO, power consumption peaked at 92.3 MW at 6 pm on Tuesday, while the lowest recorded usage was 59.5 MW at 7 am.

Electricity consumption remained lower in the first two days of Ramadan due to heavy rainfall. However, with improved weather conditions from Tuesday and the onset of the hot days of the Northeast monsoon, energy demand is expected to increase.

To help customers better track electricity usage, STELCO has adjusted the billing period for Ramadan, running from March 1 to March 31.

As part of the Government’s efforts to ease financial burdens, a 10 per cent discount on electricity bills will be provided to the public this Ramadan. The Government has allocated MVR 160 million for nationwide electricity subsidies.
