Rasfannu has reopened to the public today following renovations aimed at enhancing its facilities and accessibility.
In February 2025, President Dr Mohamed Muizzu announced plans to upgrade Rasfannu to a higher standard, prompting relevant authorities to commence development work. Following this, he visited Rasfannu today to inspect the site.
A section of Rasfannu was closed for renovations towards the end of last month. The Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works has since completed the necessary cleaning and restoration work to ensure the area is accessible to Male’ City residents during the holy month of Ramadan. Upgrades include the refurbishment of huts, barbecue stands, water fountains, and the swimming area, with assistance from relevant ministries and government-owned companies.
As Rasfannu reopened today, the Ministry of Cities, Local Government and Public Works continued cleaning operations, while the Malé City Council undertook efforts to remove sediment from the swimming area.
Dr Abdulla Muththalib, Minister of Cities, Local Government and Public Works, outlined further plans to transform Rasfannu into a permanent recreational space for the public. He stated that the redevelopment will include new public restrooms and additional leisure facilities.
The Minister noted that there are currently no toilet facilities for visitors, and the government plans to construct them along with other recreational amenities. He also highlighted the severe damage to the fishing platform, stating that it would be redeveloped to better serve fishermen. Additionally, he mentioned that more seating and other facilities would be added soon.
The Minister further revealed that redevelopment plans for both Rasfannu and Sultan Park are in progress, with permanent improvements scheduled to commence after Ramadan. He emphasised that the Government's vision for Sultan Park is to create a welcoming and fully accessible space for the public.
Additionally, the Minister noted that given the city’s dense population, President Dr Muizzu prioritises the creation of environments where families can spend time comfortably and enjoyably.
Rasfannu was originally developed and opened in 2016 for the benefit of Male’ residents under the supervision of the Ministry of Housing, during President Dr Muizzu's tenure as Housing Minister.
