The price of githeyo mirus (scotch bonnet) has declined to below MVR 150 per kilogram in the Dhathuruveringe Market due to an increased supply of fresh produce.
Currently, githeyo mirus sourced from Thaa Kandholhudhoo and Lhaviyani Atoll are readily available, with freshly harvested chilies priced at MVR 15 per 100 grams. As the chilies mature, their price decreases to MVR 10 per 100 grams.
During the previous Ramadan, the price of githeyo mirus surged to MVR 80 per 100 grams. However, this year, prices have remained more stable, ensuring greater affordability for consumers.
In addition to chilies, the market offers a selection of both locally grown and imported watermelons. These include varieties sourced from Maldivian islands and India, with Thoddoo producing notable varieties such as bodukalha and baikulha watermelons.
While some vendors sell watermelons at MVR 25 per kilogram, fresh options are available at MVR 20 per kilogram. Additionally, yellow watermelons are being sold at MVR 35 per kilogram.
Each fasting season, Thoddoo contributes more than 500 tonnes of watermelon to the market.
