A new port being developed in Baa Eydhafushi by the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) is set to provide significant relief to residents, addressing long-standing concerns over port congestion.

The port, currently under construction on the western side of the island, is expected to improve transportation and boost the local economy.

The existing port, located on the eastern side of Eydhafushi, has struggled to handle the increasing volume of traffic from 13 islands and 16 resorts in the atoll. This has led to delays and difficulties in unloading goods, particularly for local fishermen and resort workers. For years, residents have advocated for a second port, and the new development is seen as a major step towards solving these issues.

The project includes the construction of a 303-metre waterway, a 371-metre-wide rock revetment, a 119-metre stone outer wall, and a 63-metre tunnel to reclaim 5,490 square metres of land. The port is estimated to cost MVR 64.67 million, funded by the state budget, with plans to extend the project by an additional 200 feet.

Local residents have expressed optimism about the port’s potential to ease access to the island and improve daily operations. A fisherman from Eydhafushi noted that the new port would alleviate the space limitations at the existing facility, making it easier to unload fish and goods.

Mohamed Fathih, President of the Eydhafushi Council, called the new port a “permanent solution” to the island’s transport challenges. He thanked Eydhafushi MP and the Government for their efforts in bringing this development to the island, which is expected to have a positive impact on the local economy and improve the quality of life for residents.
