The Waste Management Corporation (WAMCO) has been awarded the contract to establish waste and resource management centres in 32 islands.

The agreement was officially signed at a ceremony on Tuesday, where Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim, signed on behalf of the Ministry, and WAMCO’s Managing Director, Mujuthaba Jaleel, signed on behalf of the company.

This follows the Ministry’s decision in February to award WAMCO the contract for waste management centres in Meedhoo and Hulhudheli in Dhaalu Atoll. With the latest agreement, WAMCO is now responsible for establishing waste management centres in a total of 34 islands.

Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Thoriq stated that this milestone reflects the Government’s commitment to enhancing waste management infrastructure. He highlighted that 128 islands are set to receive waste management centres under the ongoing national programme, with the remaining islands assigned to other companies to ensure full coverage.

The Minister further noted that during President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s visits to different atolls, waste management emerged as a key concern among residents. He stressed the importance of proper waste disposal, particularly in a country that welcomes a large number of tourists, as maintaining a clean environment is a source of national pride.

Emphasising the connection between the environment and the economy, Minister Thoriq stated that preserving island ecosystems will lead to cleaner communities and positively impact both public health and economic growth. He urged island councils and residents to cooperate with companies during the implementation of waste management systems.

The Minister also assured that the contracts for all 128 islands will be awarded and completed at an accelerated pace in the coming days. Meanwhile, the Ministry of Finance and Planning will continue procuring the necessary equipment to support the programme.

Speaking at the event, WAMCO’s Managing Director Mujuthaba Jaleel announced that after Ramadan, waste management services will officially launch in Haa Alifu Dhidhdhoo, Raa Ungoofaaru, and Dhaalu Kudahuvadhoo. Additionally, services will be introduced in cities and urban centres before the end of this year.
