The Judicial Services Commission (JSC) has announced the opening of applications for the position of Supreme Court judge, following the resignation of Justice Husnu Suood.
Suood resigned on February 4, 2025, after being suspended due to an ongoing investigation by the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) into corruption allegations.
The JSC is now seeking to fill the vacant position and has outlined the eligibility criteria for applicants. Candidates must be at least 30 years old, hold a first degree in Islamic Sharia or Law, and have a minimum of seven years’ experience as a lawyer or judge. Applicants must also not hold any political office or be affiliated with any political party, and must have no history of offences under Islamic law or related to fraud or bribery.
The JSC confirmed that the appointment process will include consultation with the President, in line with the constitutional requirements. Interested candidates can submit their applications through the JSC’s ‘Fahires’ portal until 11:00 p.m. on March 12, 2025.
Currently, the Supreme Court bench consists of Chief Justice Ahmed Muthasim Adnan, and Justices Aisha Shujoon Mohammed, Ali Rasheed Hussain, and Mohamed Ibrahim. However, Justices Azmiralda Zahir and Mahaz Ali Zahir remain suspended as the ACC continues to investigate allegations of corruption and abuse of power.
