The Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) installed drainage pumps in three flood-prone areas of Malé City as heavy rains continued to affect the capital.
Since Tuesday evening, continuous rainfall had led to widespread flooding across the city. In response, the MNDF stated that it remained fully prepared to take necessary measures to ensure the safety and security of the public. With further rainfall expected over the next two days, precautionary efforts were underway to mitigate damage to homes and infrastructure.
According to the MNDF, six pumps had been installed since Tuesday afternoon to help drain floodwaters in areas that were typically affected by heavy rainfall.
The drainage work was being carried out in the IGMH area, Westpark area, and Maafannu Ferry Terminal area. Additionally, sandbags were placed around civilian houses and other buildings to protect them from flooding.
The Maldives Meteorological Service (MET) initially issued a yellow alert from Haa Alifu Atoll to Alifu Dhaalu Atoll from 1:30 am to 6:30 am on Wednesday. However, the alert was later extended to include Vaavu Atoll, remaining in effect until 9:30 am.
