Minister discusses tourism growth and environmental partnerships with BML and MIB

In a push to strengthen tourism and environmental initiatives, Minister of Tourism and Environment Thoriq Ibrahim held separate discussions with executives from the Bank of Maldives (BML) and Maldives Islamic Bank (MIB), exploring ways to enhance their involvement in these critical sectors. 

During his meeting with BML Chief Executive Officer Mohamed Shareef, the Minister highlighted tourism as the backbone of the Maldivian economy, stressing the vital role of financial institutions in sustaining its growth. He also stressed the urgent need for environmental protection to ensure long-term industry success. Shareef reaffirmed BML’s commitment to both sectors, revealing that the bank is considering special loan schemes to support tourism development and conservation efforts. 

In a separate discussion with MIB Chief Executive Officer Mufaddal Idris Khumri, the Minister emphasised the importance of private sector engagement in Government-led tourism initiatives. He expressed interest in expanding MIB’s role within the sector, particularly in sustainable investment. Khumri confirmed MIB’s willingness to finance tourism projects and environmental protection efforts, reinforcing the bank’s commitment to responsible economic growth.

Both meetings concluded with agreements to continue consultations and collaborate on initiatives supporting small and medium-sized enterprises. Further discussions focused on potential projects aimed at boosting the Maldives' overall economic prosperity.
