The Maldivian Government has announced plans to establish a Coconut Development Centre in Alifu Dhaal Ariyadhoo.

Following a ministerial cabinet decision, Ariyadhoo has been placed under the jurisdiction of the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare.

The primary objective of this initiative is to cultivate high-quality coconut palms and ensure a sustainable supply of certified coconut varieties throughout the nation.

According to the Ministry, the Coconut Development Centre will include specialised nurseries dedicated to the propagation of superior coconut palm species.

Additionally, the initiative will focus on enhancing food security and promoting the cultivation of coastal vegetation to strengthen environmental sustainability.

The project will also incorporate adaptive research to identify prevalent coconut palm diseases and develop biological control methods to mitigate their impact.

To facilitate the establishment of the centre, the Government is actively seeking foreign investment for both technical expertise and financial support.

The investment is expected to cover the operational and management costs associated with the development and long-term maintenance of the facility.

The coconut palm population across many regions of the Maldives is currently experiencing an aging crisis, with a significant number of trees exceeding their peak productivity.
