Ahmed Nareesh has officially tendered his resignation from his position as Deputy Mayor of Malé City Council and as a member of the City Council.

Announcing his decision in a post on X on March 12, Nareesh stated that he was stepping down upon receiving an opportunity to serve the nation and its people in a different capacity. However, he did not disclose further details regarding his new role.

In his resignation letter addressed to Malé City Mayor Adam Azim, Nareesh described his tenure at the council as a fulfilling period of his career, highlighting the invaluable experiences he had gained and the personal growth he had achieved in the role.

He expressed his gratitude to President Dr Mohamed Muizzu, whom he commended as a leader capable of fostering collaboration among individuals of differing political affiliations to achieve swift and effective results.

Nareesh also conveyed his appreciation to the leadership of the Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) and the People’s National Congress (PNC), as well as to his constituents, for their unwavering support in securing his election. Furthermore, he extended his thanks to Mayor Azim and fellow council members for their cooperation.

A former television presenter, Nareesh entered politics in 2021, successfully contesting the Central Maafannu seat in the council elections, during which the then-opposition PPM secured a surprising landslide victory.

He was subsequently elected Deputy Mayor of Malé City on June 21, 2021 and later served as Acting Mayor following President Dr Muizzu’s resignation from the post after his victory in the 2023 presidential election.
