Ferry services from atolls will now have improved access to Malé City, following instructions made by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
As a result, the Henveiru Ferry Terminal and Hulhumalé Ferry Terminal have been opened to ferry service providers operating from the atolls.
Several ferry operators have already shown interest in using the Henveiru Terminal. Among them are launch ferry service providers from Alif Dhaalu, Kaafu and Baa atolls. However, as of now, no operators have applied to utilise the Hulhumalé Terminal.
Speaking on the matter, Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC) CEO, Retired Deputy Commissioner of Police Ahmed Saudhy, stated that the Henveiru Terminal, which also facilitates ferries to Hulhule’ and Crossroads, will be able to accommodate ferry schedules from the atolls without disruptions. However, he emphasised the need for operators to prioritise safety, given that the Henveiru Terminal is a high-speed ferry zone.
Saudhy also expressed confidence that operators may adjust their schedules in the future as they begin to experience the advantages of the Henveiru Terminal. He further highlighted that passengers who wish to dock in Hulhumalé before reaching Malé will also have the option to do so.
According to MTCC, up to 15 launch ferries per day will operate with the interested service providers, potentially serving around 2,000 passengers daily. The Henveiru Terminal will be able to accommodate five launches at a time, while the Hulhumalé Terminal can facilitate three simultaneous launches. Each ferry will have a 30-minute turnaround time, allowing passengers to remain inside the terminal until departure. Additionally, ferry operators will have access to essential facilities such as drinking water and toilet services at the terminal.
MTCC has also indicated plans to work closely with terminal service providers to identify ways to enhance service quality. Efforts will be made to implement improvements where necessary to ensure a smoother and more efficient ferry operation.
