A 24/7 mental health helpline launched by the Ministry of Health has provided much needed support to over a thousand individuals.

Since its inception, the helpline which can be reached by dialling 1677, has assisted 1184 people, offering mental health support, guidance in solving problems as well as providing them with the necessary information to navigate their struggles and referrals to relevant services.

According to a STEP survey conducted in 2022, 1 in 5 people in the Maldives experience symptoms of depression, and 1 in 20 individuals contemplate life-threatening behaviours. These statistics raise alarms and emphasise the urgent need for accessible and efficient mental health services.

The Ministry of Health has highlighted that this helpline is vital to those in distress, by offering immediate support and specialised care for individuals of all ages and backgrounds. The Ministry aims to lessen the burden of mental illness and advocate for the importance of mental well-being as well as the need for appropriate resources.
