The last ten days of Ramadan are a time of deep spiritual devotion for Muslims, marked by i'tikaf, tahajjud, and taraweeh prayers. These nights include Laylatul Qadr (the Night of Decree), regarded as the most blessed night of the year.
To facilitate worship during this sacred period, the Maldivian Government will close its offices from 20 March, following through on a key Presidential pledge by President Dr Mohamed Muizzu.
During a campaign rally in Baa Eydhafushi on August 30, 2023, President Dr Muizzu announced his Administration’s plan to designate these days as Government holidays. The initiative aims to ease the observance of worship, particularly for those performing Umrah, by eliminating the need for additional leave.
In his first Ramadan in office, President Dr Muizzu fulfilled this promise, granting public employees the opportunity to dedicate themselves to worship, reinforcing the President’s commitment to supporting religious practices.
The move has been welcomed as a significant step in enabling Maldivians to maximise the spiritual rewards of Ramadan. By formalising this break, the President has not only encouraged religious devotion but also ensured that the state actively facilitates worship.
President Dr Muizzu has repeatedly emphasised the importance of safeguarding prayer, Islam’s highest pillar, and has urged Maldivians to uphold their religious obligations. His Administration’s policies reflect a proactive approach, providing tangible support for religious observances rather than mere encouragement.
Maldivians are encouraged to take full advantage of this opportunity to engage in worship, seeking the blessings, mercy, and forgiveness associated with the sacred days of Ramadan.
